Life is a Work of Art

Life is about creating. It is through creation that we give meaning to our existence. This meaning helps us define what our lives truly are.

Creation has a broad definition. It can take any form—writing, crafts, visuals, audio, or anything else. It all depends on our interests and talents. God has placed us on this earth to give meaning to life, both individually and socially. Our role in society, our place in our family, school, workplace, and beyond—these are all shaped by our creations.

When a creation comes into being, it undergoes a process of externalization. This process emerges from an inner and physical struggle, or what Kuntowijoyo refers to as internalization. It is a dialectical journey between thesis, antithesis, and synthesis, between the negative and the positive. Thus, a creation becomes a reflection of thoughts and emotions, a manifestation of intellectual and emotional struggles.

A creation is a mirror of oneself. If we want to understand who we truly are, we can look at what we create. The significance of our existence in society can be seen through the work we produce.

Because our work exists within a social context, it is natural to receive appreciation. Whether positive or negative, supportive or dismissive, or even neutral—sometimes people may not respond at all. Our work may hold no meaning for them, which in turn means that our presence may also hold no significance to them.

So, what determines the quality of a creation? It is revealed when we complete our work and observe how society perceives and responds to it. This is not about going viral—that is merely a bonus. The most important thing is whether our work holds meaning, even for just one person. That alone signifies quality. A piece of work might not seem valuable today but may receive extraordinary recognition in the future.

However, the true essence of quality does not lie in external appreciation or how others interpret our work. What matters most is creating with heart and sincerity. Beyond that, let our work be appreciated by God, the ultimate source of all existence.
